We suspect that these results may explain some of the observations related to the presence and distribution of H2O2 across Europa’s surface as well as the lack of H2O2 on Ganymede and Callisto. Thermal- and Plasma-Induced Molecular Redistribution on the Icy Satellites
The molecular transport of condensed gas species across the surfaces of the icy satellites of Jupiter and Saturn is examined with the view of describing, in part, certain gross visual features associated with these bodies. Molecular redistribution induced by thermal sublimation and magnetospheric plasma-ion impact on satellites with negligible atmospheres is calculated by assuming that the mole...
متن کاملModeling the Jovian subnebula: II - Composition of regular satellites ices
We use the evolutionary turbulent model of Jupiter’s subnebula described by Alibert et al. (2005a) to constrain the composition of ices incorporated in its regular icy satellites. We consider CO2, CO, CH4, N2, NH3, H2S, Ar, Kr, and Xe as the major volatile species existing in the gas-phase of the solar nebula. All these volatile species, except CO2 which crystallized as a pure condensate, are a...
متن کاملOn the state of water ice on saturn's moon Titan and implications to icy bodies in the outer solar system.
The crystalline state of water ice in the Solar System depends on the temperature history of the ice and the influence of energetic particles to which it has been exposed. We measured the infrared absorption spectra of amorphous and crystalline water ice in the 10-50 K and 10-140 K temperature ranges, respectively, and conducted a systematic experimental study to investigate the amorphization o...
متن کاملPolymerization of Building Blocks of Life on Europa and Other Icy Moons.
The outer Solar System may provide a potential habitat for extraterrestrial life. Remote sensing data from the Galileo spacecraft suggest that the jovian icy moons--Europa, Ganymede, and possibly Callisto--may harbor liquid water oceans underneath their icy crusts. Although compositional information required for the discussion of habitability is limited because of significantly restricted obser...
متن کاملConvection in ice I shells and mantles with self-consistent grain size
[1] The viscosity of ice I is grain size dependent for temperature and stress conditions appropriate for ice I shells and mantles of large and midsized icy satellites. Satellite thermal evolution, heat flux, critical shell thickness for convection, brittle/ductile transition temperature, and potential for surface deformation are therefore grain size dependent. Using measured grain sizes from te...
